I’ve noticed a tendency in my life to become rather addicted to the intensity of the pendulum swings away from centre - the ecstatic highs and the heart-wrenching lows.
In other words, the drama!
For many years, I chased those extreme ends of the spectrum through binge partying and drug use in my early twenties, self-sabotaging and stirring up chaos in relationships, and working myself into total exhaustion just to reach some impossible measure of success.
What I slowly realised, through the profound simplicity of embodied practices like yoga and mindfulness meditation, is that being ‘happy’ doesn’t necessarily mean throwing ourselves again and again into stormy seas.
There’s an inner contentment we can all access if we’re willing to pause, listen, and dive beneath it all.
Because even when there is a storm passing through, the torrential waves only occur near the surface.
This realization hit home for me in Thailand while scuba diving during a storm. What was rather scary at the surface, with thunderous skies and raging waters, was magical and still when I dove a little deeper to the vibrant coral reefs where life was business as usual. Everything was quite calm down below. It struck me in a huge way!
So, in the depths of this life, I’ve come to see that true THRIVING is an ever-changing state of being; witnessing with curiosity (rather than chasing or running away from) the waves that roll through, and a deepening awareness of the stillness that remains at the centre of it all.
Through this centred stillness, I believe we can RISE into anything life throws our way!
Let’s RISE & THRIVE together!
